Designing a Widening Only Template
Updated December 02, 2021
This article applies to:
- RoadEng Civil
- RoadEng Forestry
This example explains how to do just widening for a template.
Download the sample file used with this example: HERE.
This example uses a specific E-library template component, Widening V - Widening Only-left, located in the Overlay and Widenings folder. The operation and behavior of this component are explained.
Creating Reference Features
- Open the Location module. Open Widening Only.DSNX (included with this example).
- Choose menu Setup | Location Setup | Alignment | Features. Make sure the below feature is set as Reference Features as shown in Figure 1:
- RF 1 -> CL-0
Figure 1: Setting up centerline as a reference feature.
- For the reference feature, make sure the Section tab setting is set to Intersection and that an appropriate symbol is chosen to display the reference feature (see Figure 2).

Applying the Mill/fill and Overlay Template
- Choose menu Home| Templates. There are three downloaded folders include Slopes Components, Overlays and Widenings and Ditches and Subcuts in the templates dialog box.

If your project is just widening a road, follow the below steps.
- In the downloaded folder (Overlays and Widenings). Click on the plus button and then right-click on the Widening V - Widening Only-left component and select Copy.
- Right-click on the DF-Widening Only and paste the copied component as A New.
- Right-click, while the Widening V-Widening Only object is selected and choose menu Properties. Set the following parameters:
Variable |
Default Value |
Description |
PavementDepth |
0.07 |
Depth of pavement. At different stations, pavement depth can be modified by click on the Overrides button. |
OverlayThick |
0.05 | Pavement overlay thickness. At different stations, overlay thickness can be modified by click on the Overrides button. |
DesignLaneWidth |
Reference Feature 1 (CL-0) |
The lane width can be changed in different stations. RoadEng interpolates lane width between the stations automatically. |
ShldrOffset |
Reference Feature 1 (CL-0) |
Offset from C/L to outside edge of design shoulder. |
CrossSlopeLane |
0.0 |
Lane (inside) cross slope. Crown slope will be added to this value. |
CrossSlopeShldr |
0.0 |
Shoulder (outside) cross slope. |
CrossSlopeBase |
-2.0 |
Cross slope of the bottom of the base layer. |
CrossSlopeSubbase |
0.0 |
Type 0.0 for default. But at different stations, the sub-base slope can be defined by click on the Overrides button. |
MillWidthLane |
Reference Feature 1 (CL-0) |
Width of inside milling. |
MillDepthLane |
0.0 |
Depth of inside milling. At different stations, mill depth(for lane) can be modified by click on the Overrides button. |
MillDepthShldr |
0.0 |
Depth of outside milling. At different stations, mill depth(for shoulder) can be modified by click on the Overrides button. |
OutsideFillSlope |
20.0 |
Fill slope of exposed base and sub-base material. |
BaseThick |
0.2 |
Thickness of base layer (maybe zero if desired). At different stations, base thick can be modified by click on the Overrides button. |
BaseOffset |
Reference Feature 1 (CL-0) |
Offset from C/L to edge of base. |
SubBaseThick |
0.2 |
Thickness of sub-base layer. |
- In the Ditches and Subcuts folder, click on the plus button and then right-click on the Ditch III - Vertical Tie-left component and select Copy.
- Right-click on the DF-Widening Only and paste the copied component as A New.
- Right-click, while the Ditch III - Vertical Tie-left object is selected and choose menu Properties. Set the following parameters:
Variable |
Default Value |
Description |
DitchInSlp | 20.0 | Ditch inside slope. |
DitchDepth |
Use default feature -2.2 |
Depth of the ditch measured from either centerline. |
DitchBotWd | 5.0 | Width of the bottom of the ditch horizontal distance. |
DitchBotSlp | -4.0 | Bottom of the ditch slope. |
bExcludeDitch |
0.0 |
Set to 1 to exclude ditch. This parameter can be overridden. |
bUseOutside |
1.0 |
DitchDepth reference. 0=inside, 1=outside |
bCutOnly |
0.0 |
If true, ditch will be formed only when the bottom outside is in cut. |
- While the Slope I -Standard Cut/Fill-left component is selected click on the Shift-Down button to arrange components in the template with this order:
1-Widening V - Widening Only-left
2-Ditch III - Vertical Tie-left
3 -Slope I -Standard Cut/Fill-left
- Right-click, while the Slope I -Standard Cut/Fill-left object is selected and choose menu Properties. Set the following parameters:
Variable |
Default Value |
Description |
FinalCutSlp |
25.0 |
Final cut slope. |
FinalFillSlp |
100.0 | Final fill slope. |
bApplyInCut |
1.0 |
If set to 1 the component will be applied when the attachment point is below stripped ground. |
bApplyInFill |
1.0 |
If set to 1 the component will be applied when the attachment point is above stripped ground. |
- Press OK twice. When prompted, Recalculate Range.
- The screen should appear as shown below.
